All along the coast of Catalonia, there are plenty of places where you can play, have fun and practice sport as a family. But if what you want is to relax in the sun and charge your batteries for the rest of the year, here you’ll find the best coves where you can cast your anchor and beaches with all amenities for you and your children.
Catalonia is privileged to have swelled the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites with architectural works by Antoni Gaudí and Domènech i Montaner, the archaeological site of Tarragona, Santa Maria de Poblet monastery and the Romanesque churches in Vall de Boí, among others.
All of these places have been selected for their exceptional qualities and because they exemplify the cultural or natural heritage that they represent.
According to UNESCO, what makes the concept of world heritage exceptional is its universal application.
The World Heritage List draws the international community’s attention to the richness and diversity of the planet’s cultural and natural heritage.
In Catalonia, the Patum de Berga festival and the Castells – the long-standing tradition of forming human towers – have also been declared examples of Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. In addition, the Montseny Nature Reserve forms part of the Global Network of Biosphere Reserves
Wine is part of our history. Every glass contains a tiny piece of our heritage. The Greeks brought it to L’Empordà and the Romans turned it into a trade. And together, they taught us to savour and pair it. Vineyards are a part of the Mediterranean landscape of Catalonia and can be found on the coast, inland and even in the mountains.
If your thing is natural parks and fresh air, then you must come to Catalonia. More than 30% of the territory is protected to preserve natural ecosystems. One of the most spectacular protected areas is Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, with more than 200 lakes and majestic mountains. Winter or summer, any season is a perfect time to visit it. But if you want to bathe in the lakes, you’ll have to wait until the snow has melted and the sun has warmed up the water.
Some of the almost 9,000 kilometres of long and short-distance paths pass through Aigüestortes. You can cross Catalonia from north to south and from west to east. If your goal is to put your boots on and walk in unspoilt nature, here you’ll find itineraries that are just right for you or your family.
Catalonia has a long cycling tradition. Some of the big names in professional cycling have come from Catalonia, but there are also many amateur cyclists who go out on weekends for a ride with friends. Mountain biking is also very popular.
And if you’d like to practice adventure sports, the Catalan Pyrenees are one of the best places. Equip yourself and go canyoning down one of the many gorges. During the spring thaw, the Noguera Pallaresa River becomes a white water paradise for rafting.
